Hello, this is Awork Academy.

In our previous post, we introduced the baggage regulations and precautions for ANA (All Nippon Airways).

This time, we'll guide you through the baggage regulations and precautions for JAL (Japan Airlines), one of Japan's leading airlines.

When studying a language abroad or staying long-term, luggage tends to pile up.
Be sure to check the airline's regulations thoroughly before departure.

< Precautions When Preparing Your Baggage >

  • Always attach a name tag to your suitcase or bag showing your name, address, and destination.

  • For sports equipment such as bicycles or surfboards, oversized baggage, or pet transport, be sure to contact the airline in advance.

  • Some items are restricted and cannot be brought as either carry-on or checked baggage.

>>>Please check the official JAL website for more details.<<<

< Precautions When Checking In Baggage >

  • The weight measured at the airport may differ from the weight you measured at home.

  • If a single item of baggage exceeds the regulated weight or size, an extra fee may apply, or it may not be accepted.

  • You cannot check in baggage on behalf of another person.

  • To retrieve your baggage smoothly after arrival, be sure to keep your baggage claim tag until the very end.

<Precautions When Retrieving Your Baggage >

  • When you collect your baggage from the belt conveyor, always check that it is really yours.
Since many suitcases look similar, a name tag or distinguishing mark can be very helpful.

  • If you are carrying items that require a customs declaration, fill out and submit the **"Declaration of Personal Effects and Unaccompanied Articles"** distributed on board.

< Carry-On Baggage Standards (International Flights) >

  • Size limit: Total of length, width, and height within 115cm (approx. within 55×40×25cm)

  • Quantity: 1 piece + up to 1 personal item (handbag, laptop bag, etc.) (2 pieces total)

  • Weight: Total within 10kg (carry-on bag + personal item combined)

  • If the size or weight exceeds the regulation, the item may not be allowed in the cabin and may be sent to the cargo hold instead.

<Checked Baggage (Free Allowance, International Flights)>

JAL's free checked baggage allowance on international flights varies depending on your boarding class.

■ Economy Class / Premium Economy

  • Up to 2 pieces free

  • Up to 23kg per piece

  • The total of the three dimensions (length + width + height) should be within 203cm as a guide.

■ Business Class / First Class

  • Up to 3 pieces free

  • Up to 32kg per piece (may vary depending on class)

  • The size regulation is likewise within 203cm total for the three dimensions.

*In some cases, pieces up to 45kg may be accepted, but the free allowance and extra fee regulations differ.

Summary

Carry-On Baggage

  • 1 piece + 1 personal item (e.g., handbag)

  • Total within 10kg, and within 115cm for the three dimensions as a guide.

  • Economy/Premium Economy: Up to 2 pieces, up to 23kg each

  • Business/First: Up to 3 pieces, up to 32kg each
