Cebu's Biggest Festival | The Sinulog Festival

Hello, this is Awork Academy.

In our previous post, we introduced recommended cities for language study in the Philippines.
Among them, Cebu is a truly attractive city, famous as a tourist destination and offering plenty of great food and activities.

At the end of the previous post, we briefly touched on the Sinulog Festival, Cebu's signature festival. This time, we'll introduce the Sinulog Festival in detail for those planning to study a language abroad over the winter break.

< What Is the Sinulog Festival? >

Studying in the Philippines: enjoying cross-cultural exchange at a local festival, a real glimpse of life abroad

The Sinulog Festival is an ethnic and religious festival held every January in Cebu, Philippines.

It runs for about 10 days, until the third Sunday of January, and is celebrated on a grand scale throughout Cebu.

The festival is also a religious event honoring the "Santo Niño (statue of the Holy Child Jesus)."

The word "Sinulog" means "graceful dance" in Tagalog and comes from a descriptive expression meaning "like flowing water." True to its name, the dance is characterized by stepping forward and backward in a movement like the flow of a river.

As Cebu's signature festival, it features a wide variety of events every year.

Visitors come not only from across the Philippines but also from overseas, and the streets are lively with food stalls and street vendors.

Exhibitions are also held showcasing Cebu's specialties and export products, such as dried mangoes.

① Sinulog Contest

It began as a simple festival of dancing in the streets, but today a dance contest is held.

Groups from other regions also take part, and it is usually held at venues such as the city gymnasium. If you're interested, be sure to go and watch.

② River Procession (Fluvial Parade)

One of the festival's highlights, it is held on the third Saturday.

The Santo Niño statue is placed on a boat and travels around various parts of the city.

People follow behind the statue, setting off fireworks, dancing, and cheering, making it a very lively event. In recent years, petals have also been showered from helicopters.

③ Grand Parade

On the final day of the festival, Cebu Island is painted in vivid colors by a large-scale parade that closes out the celebrations.

With lively music, crowds of hundreds of thousands gather. Giant floats are built,
and the participants compete for the top prize. It is said that famous Filipino actors sometimes ride on the floats.

< Points to Note (Safety Measures) >

Because it is such a large festival, security is stepped up, but it is also a time when pickpocketing and petty crime are more likely to occur.

It is said that around 2 million people gather every year, so extra caution is needed in crowds.

Mobile connections can also become unstable, so be prepared by, for example, deciding on a meeting place with your companions in advance.

Summary

This time, we introduced the Sinulog Festival, the signature festival of Cebu in the Philippines.

Since it coincides with the winter language-study season, if you're thinking of taking part, please enjoy it while paying close attention to your safety.
