About the School
ALP is located on the campus of Ohio State University, one of the largest and finest comprehensive universities in the United States. Students can enjoy a wide range of educational, cultural, social and sports activities, and thanks to the small number of students and dedicated faculty, students feel as comfortable as they would at home. The program values not only improving your skills but also American culture and relationships with American students. The American Language Program (ALP) is the English language institute of Ohio State University. It teaches language and learning methods to students for whom English is a foreign language, and helps them acquire the language skills and cultural knowledge needed to succeed at universities in the United States, in workplaces that require English, and in life in the United States. In addition, the program respects and encourages the linguistic and cultural diversity on and off campus, and welcomes any inquiries or collaboration from students and outside parties, as well as professional engagement within the field of TESOL. ALP courses are not recognized as credits toward a university degree. Students in the two highest levels may audit regular university classes. Most students come from Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and Taiwan, and there are also students from the Middle East, South America, Europe and Africa enrolled in the program. Students from 15 to 20 or more countries are enrolled in the program at all times. All instructors hold at least a master's degree in TESOL and have considerable experience in the field. They are part of the university faculty and are also engaged in professional services related to education. ALP students can use university dormitories, homestays, or off-campus housing. Living in an on-campus dormitory places you close to classrooms and makes it convenient to take part in school events. Students who wish to use an on-campus dormitory must request a dormitory application. When students arrive in Columbus, ALP can guide them regarding off-campus accommodation. There are also private dormitories to which students can apply online. As a new accommodation option for ALP students, there is also a homestay, living with an American family near campus. Accommodation is limited, so it is best to apply as early as possible.
