About the School

English Language Institute (ELI) The ELI is based at the University of Delaware in an elegant mansion and nearby annex buildings. It was established in 1979 to provide linguistic, academic, and cultural support to international students, scholars, and professionals. Its educational programs include the Intensive English Program, university preparation, Business English, and Legal English. One of the ELI's main goals is to encourage and develop diverse cultural exchange between the campus and the local community. [Facilities] The ELI building houses classrooms, faculty and administrative staff, a state-of-the-art self-access learning center, and a tutoring center. Each classroom is equipped with wireless internet and a variety of multimedia technology. All buildings are within easy walking distance of one another. Each ELI student receives a University of Delaware e-mail account as well as a university ID card. [Students' Countries of Origin] More than 1,000 students from over 90 countries come to the ELI every year. Roughly, students from Asia make up 41% of the total, Latin America 29%, the Middle East 14%, Europe 9%, the South Pacific 2%, Africa 3%, and North America 2%. [Instructor Qualifications] All classes are taught by university faculty. All instructors are native English speakers with a master's degree in teaching English as a second language or in linguistics, and have extensive training and teaching experience in ESL. [Accommodation] Most ELI students use on-campus housing, and a homestay with an American family is also available. A homestay is a great opportunity for students who want to experience American culture firsthand as a member of an American family. School Features

  • [ Individual Tutoring ] At no additional charge, the ELI provides one-on-one tutoring by trained tutors to students in the full-time IEP course. Students can choose private tutoring (2 hours per week), in which they meet and study with a single tutor, or group tutoring (3 hours per week), in which three or four students meet with one tutor for 2 hours on a specific topic such as pronunciation or grammar, or meet with one tutor for 1 hour. (2–3 hours per week) [ Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) ] The SALC supplements classroom instruction with the latest English-training technology. In our new SALC, students can use computers, reading materials, subtitled television programs, tape/CD and video recorders, and program guidance supported by the SALC coordinator. Here, students can use e-mail, the internet, specialized ESL software programs, and online language games that teach pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing, and listening skills. Practice programs for the TOEFL, GMAT, and GRE are also available. (3–5 hours per week) [ Listening Lab ] Using a variety of video and audio materials, the Listening Lab gives students additional practice in listening comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. (2 hours per week) [ Conditional Admission CAP / Credit Transition AT ]
  • CAP Conditional Admission Program: Helps students enter master's or doctoral programs at the University of Delaware (or one of its partner universities). CAP students do not have to take the TOEFL or IELTS.
  • AT Credit Transition Program: Through this new pathway program for students conditionally admitted to bachelor's degree programs at the University of Delaware, students can improve their academic English while earning up to 27 university credits.
