Australia: How to Prepare for a Working Holiday on Your Own ①|What Do You Need to Prepare and Pack?

Travel to Australia, which had been temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been open to Japanese nationals who have completed vaccination since last year.

Along with this, applications for the Australian Working Holiday visa also reopened in December 2021, and visa review and approval are now progressing relatively smoothly.

we'll explain the Australian Working Holiday visa in detail, from how to apply to the documents you'll need.


Steps to Apply for the Australian Working Holiday Visa

The visa application proceeds in the following order.

Visa application → Payment of application fee → Health check → Visa approval


1. What You Need to Apply for the Working Holiday Visa

  • A passport valid for at least 1 year from your departure date

  • An ID document (for Japan: My Number card, etc.)

  • An English bank balance certificate showing at least AUD 5,000 (about 500,000 yen)

  • A credit card that can be used for overseas payments

【Notes】

  • Be sure to upload color scans of your passport and English bank balance certificate.

  • The name shown on the English bank balance certificate must exactly match the name on your passport.


2. About the Visa Application Fee

At the final stage of the visa application, you will need to pay the application fee.

  • Payment method: Credit card or debit card that supports overseas payments

  • Current application fee: AUD 510

※ The visa application fee may change every year, so please check the official website for the latest information.
※ A card handling fee (around AUD 10) will also apply.


3. About the Health Check

After applying for the visa, you must undergo a health check at a designated medical institution.

There are four hospitals in Japan designated for the Australian visa health check.

  • Tokyo: Seibo Hospital

  • Tokyo: Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic

  • Osaka: Osaka Kaisei Hospital

  • Fukuoka: Fukuoka Tuberculosis Prevention Center

※ All hospitals require an appointment.
※ Due to COVID-19, procedures may vary by hospital, so please be sure to check with the hospital in advance before booking.

What to Bring to the Health Check

  • Health form (issued after visa application and payment)

  • Passport

  • Passport-sized photo

  • Health check fee (around 17,000 yen, varies by hospital)
