Hello everyone
AWork Academy here :)
When learning English, it's said that a slump period comes every so often.
Especially when you're studying abroad and living in a foreign country,
if you go through something like this, it can catch you pretty off guard.
But not just with English — with anything in life,
a period like this is bound to come around at least once,
and it's something you can naturally overcome with time, so
before anything else, let me say: there's no need to worry too much
and start today's post about the English slump.
< Why does an English slump happen? >
So why does this kind of English slump happen?
Honestly, the reasons vary from person to person.
- When you've worked hard, but your test scores or grades aren't satisfying
- When you set a high goal and burn out from pushing yourself too hard
- When living abroad wears you out physically and mentally
- When you feel stuck in the same place without making progress
And for all sorts of other reasons like these, a slump can come along.
You may also have been studying with the wrong habits all this time.
< Don't fall into negative thinking >

When most people hit a slump,
“ Is this as far as my limits go? “
“ I guess English just isn't for me after all “
they tend to fall into negative thoughts like these all too easily.
Some even spend money and time going on a language-study trip abroad, but
end up exhausted by everything and return home earlier than planned.
But at times like this, rather than giving up,
it's important to see it as a natural part of the process of improving your skills
and to accept it as it is.
< So how do you overcome it? >
1) Set an achievable goal
In anything you do, having a sense of purpose is the most important thing.
Without a goal, it's like a ship drifting on the open sea with no destination.
That's why, instead of aiming too high,
you should set a realistically achievable goal
and work hard toward it — this can also be one way
to overcome a slump.
For example, try taking a practice test for an official English exam,
or set a comfortable, achievable goal and actually sit the exam.
Doing so can make you realize you're not wasting your effort after all,
and that feeling can naturally help you get past the slump.
2) Change of pace

"I'm already in an English slump, and now you want me to take another English test?
I don't even want to look at English right now!" — some of you might be thinking that.
At times like this, rather than holed up in your room lost in thought,
or forcing yourself to stare at a textbook,
I'd recommend going outside for a change of pace and having some real fun instead.
Surprisingly, this can be the easiest and best method.
Take a trip somewhere close to where you're studying,
enjoy some good food, and chat with people —
3) Reach out to your language school

Some people travel or study abroad on their own, but
most people go on their language study trip with help from a language school.
The staff in charge at the school and the teachers who teach you
also play the role of listening to students' concerns and offering guidance.
If you reach out first and share what's troubling you and ask for help,
they'll likely offer you kind, helpful suggestions.
After all, if you don't speak up first, no one will ever know you're struggling with this.
In today's post, we talked about what to do
when an English slump hits you during your language study abroad, and how to overcome it.
As mentioned above, a slump
isn't something that happens because you're weak or not good enough —
it's simply a natural part of the process of growth, so
please don't worry too much — just let it go,
take your time, and work through it steadily.
