Various Ways to Choose an English Name Before Heading Abroad

Hello everyone,

AWork Academy here! :)

Before heading abroad for a long trip, working holiday, language study abroad, and more,

for all sorts of reasons,

many people pick out an English name for themselves.

“ Do I really need an English name?

I'll just use my Korean name as it is! “

If that's you, that's totally fine too!

But choosing an English name is also said to be

one way to enjoy life abroad even more.

Some worry that it might feel

too unfamiliar for a Korean to use a foreign name,

or that they might end up picking an old-fashioned name,

but once you actually go abroad,

so many people use English names

that no one really pays attention to what name you use.

So in today's post, let's look together at

the different ways you can come up with an English name.

< Adapting Your Korean Name >

The first method we recommend

is choosing an English name that sounds similar to your own name.

It's also the most commonly used method.

For example,

해린, 혜린 -> 헬렌, 헤일리

재인, 재희 -> 제인

선희 -> 써니

진아 -> 지나

철수 -> 찰스

재석 -> 잭슨

and so on — you can use a name that sounds similar to your own,

or use the initial letter of your name's first consonant.

Ex)

Names starting with ㅈ

: Jacob, Jackson, Jenny, Julia

Names starting with ㅅ

: Simon, Samuel, Serena, Shylo

Names starting with ㅇ

: Olier, Idris, Yeriel, Yisabel, Elin

Names starting with ㅎ

: Henry, Hayden, Hilda, Hazel

< English Names with Good Meanings >

Next, some people use words with a good meaning in English

as their name.

Noah – rest, comfort

Mateo – gift of God

Dylan – son of the sea

Antheny – precious

Angela – angel

Bella – beautiful

Chloe – blooming, budding green

Nevaeh – Heaven spelled backwards

< Using Your Birth Season or Month >

As one simple yet novel(?) method, there's

using your birth month or season.

It can be a name that's simple yet memorable.

Luby – July's birthstone

Sappahire – September's birthstone

Summer – summer

May – May

.

.

< Using the Meaning of Your Name As Is >

Also, quite a few people use the direct meaning of their Korean name.

지혜 -> Shophia, Wisdom

수정 -> Crystal

은혜 -> Grace

영광 -> Gloria
